Distinguished Professor Huu Hao Ngo (Hao) is an award winning and world-leading researcher in environmental engineering who has a special interest in wastewater treatment and reuse, and environmental biotechnology for sustainable development. Hao has made it his mission to have his work published in high-impact journals, to work with quality collaborators, and to be an active and leading member in the global network of scholars in his fields, through editing top journals and reviewing the papers of others. As Dstinguished Professor of Environmental Engineering and Deputy Director of the Centre for Technology in Water and Wastewater at UTS, Hao helps oversee the development of innovative technologies that deliver abundant supplies of recycled water and green and sustainable technologies for clean energy and materials towards practical zero emission. He is also Co-Director of the Joint Research Centre for Protective Infrastructure Technology and Environmental Green Bioprocess, which was formed by China’s Tianjin Chengjian University and UTS. He has also served as President of the International Bioprocessing Association, is a Fellow of International Water Association and Distinguished Fellow of the International Bioprocessing Association. He is currently a founder and Executive Coordinator of the newly established Australasia Practical Zero Emissions Society (APZES)

Thomas J. Webster’s (H index: 117; Google Scholar) degrees are in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh (B.S., 1995; USA) and in biomedical engineering from RPI (Ph.D., 2000; USA). He has served as a professor at Purdue (2000-2005), Brown (2005-2012), and Northeastern (2012-2021; serving as Chemical Engineering Department Chair from 2012 - 2019) Universities and has formed over a dozen companies who have numerous FDA approved medical products currently improving human health. He is currently helping those companies and serves as a professor at Hebei University of Technology, Saveetha University, Vellore Institute of Technology, UFPI, and others. Dr. Webster has numerous awards including: 2020, World Top 2% Scientist by Citations (PLOS); 2020, SCOPUS Highly Cited Research (Top 1% Materials Science and Mixed Fields); 2021, Clarivate Top 0.1% Most Influential Researchers (Pharmacology and Toxicology); 2022, Best Materials Science Scientist by Citations (Research.com); and is a fellow of over 8 societies. Prof. Webster is a former President of the U.S. Society For Biomaterials and has over 1,350 publications to his credit with over 53,000 citations. He was recently nominated for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (2023).

The main objective of my work relates to the physiology of microalgae as related to mass culturing outdoors. In a nutshell the work so far points out that our original approach taken some 35 years ago of treating algal growth outdoors in terms of light limitation or a process governed by one main limiting factor was a naive attempt to simplify things. Our findings point out that in many cases the system is down regulated or even photoinhibited not necessarily because of exposure to high light intensity but rather due to other environmental stress that reduce the photosynthetic activity be it temperature or salinity. As a result the ability of the cells to utilize light by the photosynthetic machinery is reduced and thus light levels that are considered as harmless under optimal growth conditions are turning to be over-saturating levels and result in down regulating and photoinhibiting the photosynthetic apparatus. Based on this working hypothesis we are also reviewing some of our old data related to the role of light and temperature in outdoor cultures and getting a better understanding that algal cultures are shifted during the day from light limitation to light inhibition in a relatively very fast cycle. The major organism studied was Spirulina or under it scientific name Arthrospira platensis. A large collection of strains collected during the years from all over the world is used in our studies. In recent years a significant part of the work is dedicated to selection of species (Nannochloropsis) either from different habitats or after induced random mutations with the attempt to isolate strains of higher adaptability capacity to biotic stress. Present Academic Activities: The main activities in my group along the above mentioned line are: - Acclimation of the photosynthetic apparatus of two Spirulina strains to salinity stress and low temperature: (photoinhibition and antioxidants). - The role of environmental factors ( high salt and high light ) on growth and fatty-acid biosynthesis in Monodus subterraneus - Isolation of mutants of the marine microalgae Nannochloropsis. oceamica resitent to 'oxidative stress" and the modification induced in their growth and photosynthetic capacity.

Dr. Nadia Benkirane is Research director and head of the “ Regenerative Nanomedicine” laboratory, at INSERM (French National Institute for Health and Medical Research), UMR 1260 Strasbourg, France. She received her Ph.D. from University Louis Pasteur, ULP, Strasbourg, France. She then held a postdoctoral position in collaboration with the Institut Pasteur, Paris, France and another postdoctoral position on the application of modified peptides as vaccines against FMDV (Plum Island Animal Disease Center, ARS, USDA, Greenport, NY 11944-0848, USA). She joined the INSERM U595 in 2002 as a post-doc, and received the diploma to direct the research (HDR) in 2004. Dr. Jessel got the permanent position (CR1) in the INSERM 595 laboratory in 2004 and Research Director (DR2) position in the INSERM 977 and head of “active Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering team from 2009 until 2012). Currently Research Director (DR1) in the INSERM UMR 1109 (Osteoarticular and Dental Regenerative Nanomedicine" and heads the team. Dr. Jessel possesses expertise in diverse fields of molecular and cellular biology, immunochemistry, tissue engineering and biomedical engineering. In the last 10 years, she focused her research on the bio-functionalization of multilayered polyelectrolyte architectures with emphasis on the use of these architectures to induce specific cellular responses and gain control over cell proliferation and differentiation. Dr. Benkirane-Jessel have 138 publications (h index: 36) with peer-reviewed publications in high impact factor journals (Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. USA; Adv. Mater.; Adv. Funct. Dr. Liao's research includes studies on signal transduction pathways, small ubiquitin-like modifier ligase, G protein-coupled receptors, and lipid receptors. He has developed several high-throughput screening systems for drug candidates. Dr. Liao has made some important discoveries of novel G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) particularly associated with taste receptors utilizing bioinformatic methods. Recently he has found evidence for several fatty acid receptors that may play an important role in understanding fatty acid induced insulin resistance and the relationship between obesity and diabetes. Osama Ibrahim is a highly-experienced Principal Research Scientist with particular expertise in the field of microbiology, molecular biology, food safety and bioprocessing for both pharmaceutical and food ingredients. He is knowledgeable in microbial screening /culture improvement; molecular biology and fermentation research for antibiotics, enzymes, therapeutic proteins, organic acids and food flavors; Biochemistry for metabolic pathways and enzymes kinetics, enzymes immobilization, bioconversion and Analytical Biochemistry. Ibrahim was external research liaison for Kraft Foods with Universities for research projects related to molecular biology and microbial screening and holds three bioprocessing patents. In January 2005, he accepted an early retirement offer from Kraft Foods and in the same year he formed his own biotechnology company providing technical and marketing consultation for new startup biotechnology and food companies.

Dr. Cremer (B.S. MIT, 1976, PhD. Electrical Engineering, U. of Maryland, 1984), chief scientist of Adelphi Technology, has a diverse experimental and theoretical background in applied physics, which includes x-ray/neutron sources, detectors, optics, bioelectric phenomena (artificial skin S.B thesis at MIT), and postdoctoral traineeship in biophysics on cellular electrofusion and electrically mediated gene transfer at University of California at San Francisco, 1984-1986. Dr. Cremer has published 43 peer-reviewed publications, 4 books on neutron and x-ray optics with Academic Press (Elsevier), and 4 issued US patents. Presently, Dr. Cremer is funded with grants for research and development of instruments for neutron spin echo, neutron radiography, neutron diffractometry, neutron small angle scattering, and gas sensors.

Vakhtang Barbakadze has his expertise in isolation and structure elucidation of a new series of plant polyethers, which are endowed with pharmacological properties as anti-cancer agents. Besides, he interested in enantioselective synthesis and biological activities of basic monomeric moiety of these biopolyethers, synthesis of enantiomerically pure epoxides as chiral building blocks for the production of synthetic analogues of natural polyethers. He has completed his Ph.D and D.Sci. in 1978 and 1999, respectively. He is the head of Department of Plant Biopolymers and Chemical Modification of Natural Compounds at the Tbilisi State Medical University I.Kutateladze Institute of Pharmacochemistry. In 1996 and 2002 he has been a visiting scientist at Utrecht University, The Netherlands, by University Scholarship and The Netherlands organization for scientific research (NWO) Scholarship Scientific Program, respectively.
